o festival - WHERE?
The Megasamba festival is an event organized by the Samba School “G.R.E.S. Bota” from Sesimbra, which usually takes place every year on the last weekend of July in the beautiful village of Sesimbra. Located just 40 km from Lisbon, the fishing village is one of the main tourist destinations in Portugal and is renowned for its rich historical heritage, gastronomy - where the unique quality of its fish stands out -, its beaches of calm and clean waters and a perfect symbiosis between the sea and the Arrábida Natural Park. Adding to all this, Sesimbra is also known today for its samba tradition.
o festival - WHO?
With a history of more than 40 years and a collection of around 200 compositions that over time have played the different plots of various carnivals, Sesimbra is today a rhythmic cauldron marked by the samba of Rio de Janeiro and the rhythms of Bahia expressed by its axé blocks. To open the doors to the world, the Samba School Bota has promoted throughout its long history (since 1976) several initiatives of samba exaltation, promoting the communion between people of different cultures, where its festival is the maximum expression. At the moment MegaSamba is already considered one of the biggest and most important cultural events of Europe and a reference in this field.
o festival - HOW?
MegaSamba Festival came from the idea of a Samba School Bota element that, after emigrating to Switzerland, had the vision to make an event that united percussionists from all over Europe to appear in Sesimbra in the form of a big batucada - MegaBateria. The process has progressed to other levels and today MegaSamba is a festival characterized by its eclecticism, with the main objectives being the conviviality, knowledge sharing and friendship among various peoples around this universal culture that is Samba. With the initial purpose of only gathering percussionists from different countries in a MegaBateria, the MegaSamba is today much more than this, because it unites composers, percussionists, choreographers, passistas, couples of Mestre-Sala and Porta-Bandeira besides other representatives of samba schools from various parts of the world.
Having the beauty of Sesimbra Bay as the "stage", MegaSamba offers a rich, varied and very dynamic program. During the event there are several workshops/lectures on percussion, samba no pé, composition/harmony, ballroom dancing - gafieira, among others. The festival has always had a team of monitors with vast experience and pedagogically prepared for different levels of learning, which provides a harmonious acquisition of knowledge for all partitipants.
There are also several shows during the 4 days of the event, MegaBateria trials and on the last day of the event a joint performance of MegaBateria with all participants sambistas and passistas.
